David D. Sprague, Elder Law Attorney.   David is a Parter in the firm and his practice includes business law, real estate law, representation of landlords, probate and estate planning, Medicaid, Special Needs and VA planning, and some family law (domestic relations) matter.  The focus of David's practice is establishing and growing businesses, protecting those assets and passing them on through proper planning. 

David has experience working as an attorney at two nationally recognized law firms: Raymond & Prokop, P.C. and Pepper Hamilton LLP. In addition, David has helped clients to successfully complete applications with the Michigan Minority Business Development Council and has defended claims made by the Business Software Alliance.  Prior to practicing law, David had nearly 10 years of experience working in the automotive industry and the field of information technology for General Motors Corporation on its Corporate Finance Staff, and for Electronic Data Systems as an Operations Manager.

David is also known for the articles he authored for Technology and the Law, a supplement to the Great Lakes IT Report published electronically by Matt Roush (WWJ 950). In addition, some of David’s articles have been published in the Automation Alley newsletters, the Detroiter and the Michigan Bar Journal.

David is actively involved with the Family Law and Probate and Estate Planning Certificated Programs offered by Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE). David participates in continuing education to stay current on family law, business law, real estate and estate planning/probate issues that affect his clients. David has received his Certificate of Completion for the Probate & Estate Planning Certificate Program offered by ICLE and the Probate & Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Throughout his career, David has been involved in volunteering for and serving philanthropic, educational and charitable organizations. His involvement with his college fraternity continued after college when he became a Leadership and Educational Consultant and later the Director of Chapter Operation for Theta Chi Fraternity. He has provided service to Theta Chi as a Regional Counselor, Regional Director and as a member of the Risk Management and Standards Committee. He has received numerous Fraternity awards including Theta Chi’s Sherwood Blue Graduate Scholarship Award, and Citation of Honor. David is one of six attorneys currently serving as a member of Theta Chi Fraternity’s legal affairs committee. Additionally, David also has served as a director on the Board of Trustees of the Optometric Institute and Clinic of Metro Detroit which provides complete primary eye and vision care to people with restricted financial resources.

In his spare time, David is an avid sportsman and he enjoys travel, golf, hockey, skiing, archery, attending Lions, Tigers, Michigan Football or Red Wings games or just being on the lake or in the woods.

Education and Professional Activities

David received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While attending law school, David participated in Law Review, Moot Court, and the American Inns of Court, as well as serving as Treasurer of the Student Bar Association. David has continued his legal education as a student at the Wayne State University School of Law in the LL.M. taxation program. 

David is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Family Law and Probate and Estate Planning Sections. He is also a member of the Oakland County and Detroit Bar Associations.

After graduating from Montrose Hill-McCloy High School, David attended the University of Michigan-Flint where he founded the Zeta Tau Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. While at the University he participated in Student Government and was a Freshman Orientation Leader. In his spare time, David is an avid sportsman and he enjoys travel, golf, hockey, skiing, archery, attending Lions, Tigers, Michigan Football or Red Wings games or just being on the lake or in the woods. As an avid sportsman and athlete, David is proud to have been elected into the Montrose Sports and Community Hall of Fame in 2011 as a member of the 1985 Montrose Rams Football team.
